THE LIFE-CHANGING SCIENCE OF STEM CELL INNOVATION

STEM CELL INNOVATION

The idea of adult stem cell therapy is to control and guide the growth of adult stem cells within a laboratory and then use them to replace dysfunctional cells that are present in disease.

Some of the targeted treatments involve the replacement of cells in the brains of people who have Parkinson's disease. Scientists hope to replace the dopamine producing cells and reduce progression of this disease.  Another objective is to develop insulin-producing cells for diabetes. And with heart attacks causing enormous morbidity and mortality each year, preliminary results show that adult stem cells can repair damage to the heart.

The use of adult stem cells is more widely accepted, particularly by the public, because it does not require destruction of an embryo as with embryonic stem cells. Adult stem cells also don't have the same immunological challenges as embryonic stem cells because they are harvested from the patient. This means that a person's body is less likely to reject the stem cells because they are compatible with that person's unique physiological makeup.  MASCs however, are not rejected, so MASCs from a single donor can treat thousands of patients.

THE BELIEVERS

Gina Lollobrigida, the Italian actress once considered the most beautiful woman in the world, is selling some of her diamond jewellery to raise money for stem cell research.

Watch Suzanne Somers' amazing breast reconstruction surgery on Suzanne Somers Breaking Through - Episode 1. Find out how Suzanne used her own stem cells to regrow her breast after battling breast cancer.

SENATE BILL NO. 361?SENATOR SCHNEIDER Authorizes the Nevada Institutional Review Board to engage in various activities related to nonembryonic stem cells.

At the University of Nevada at Reno, scientists are developing the ability to grow human organs in sheep from human stem cells injected into sheep embryos still inside the pregnant ewe. These organs would be used for transplants back into the initial stem cell donor, who would be given bone marrow stem cells.
