Adult stem cells are undifferentiated cells found throughout the body that divide to replenish dying cells and regenerate damaged tissues. They can be found in children as well as adults. One type, Multipotent Adult Stem Cells (MASCs), are multipotent cells that can differentiate into a variety of cell types. They are the most important stem cells because they repair tissue. These cells are really versatile and have a ton of clinical applications. They differentiate to repair/replace cardiac muscle, skeletal muscle, bone, cartilage, tendons, ligaments, and nerves when they get injured or diseased. They've been shown to replace nerve cells, cartilage cells, and heart cells.
One of the reasons research has been accelerated with adult stem cells is because researchers have discovered adult stem cells in more tissues than they originally anticipated. The use of embryonic stem cells has generated a lot of controversy so the option of using adult stem cells for transplants is an exciting one. Adult stem cells have actually been used for decades for bone marrow transplants but more uses are needed to treat other debilitating and life threatening diseases.  Your body is in a constant state of turnover. New cells constantly need to replace old, worn out cells. For example, if you go out for a jog, you are literally killing off cartilage cells in your knee, you are killing off muscle cells and tendon cells; all those cells get replaced. In fact, many of those tissues get rebuilt stronger, including your bones, if you exercise more.
Multipotent Adult Stem Cells (MASCs) are like construction managers. There is overwhelming evidence that they differentiate to cells to rebuild tissues. They also make new blood vessels so that the new tissue has a new blood supply. MASCs can be grown to any number of cells in a laboratory, thus providing enough cells to regenerate any organ. MASCs from one person are not rejected by another person's immune system, so MASCs from a single donor can treat thousands of patients. MASCs are "stem cells in a bottle". One day they will be considered the 21st century form of penicillin; they are that versatile with repairing damaged tissue, organizing body construction projects, and bringing in new blood vessels. Just like penicillin rewrote medicine in the 1940's, these cells will rewrite medicine in its application in the 21st century.
